Know The Novel part 1: Introducing My NaNo Project (In MORE DETAIL)

NaNo is coming, NaNo is coming… *cue screaming*

Sooo. I came across this awesome new linkup created hosted by Musings of an Elf called Know The Novel and I just HAD to do it. The linkup will take place this month, next month, and December for NaNoWriMo though you DON’T have to be doing NaNo to take part and have fun. You can read more about it and join and everything here.

I introduced my NaNo novel here if you’re interested.

1. What first sparked the idea for this novel?

So I first got the idea for Magic in the City of Sin during NaNoWriMo last year actually. I was writing a book that involved magical performances and also listening to the Greatest Showman soundtrack on repeat and it kind of bloomed from there. I wanted to write more on magical performances and a magical exhibition with a swoon-worthy romance.

2. Share a blurb!

Set in a futuristic, magical Las Vegas where elementalists are the most highly regarded of celebrities, two girls from opposing family’s fall in love amidst a backdrop of betrayal.

Basically, Romeo & Juliet with magic and lesbians. (And a happy ending because I’m not about that tragic ending life.)

3. Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects about the setting?

Magic in the City of Sin, of course, takes place in the City of Sin, Las Vegas. It’s set in the future, in a slightly alternate world considering there’s magic. The aspect I’m most excited about is the magic. And I kind of have a thing for books set in places based on Vegas which is strange only because I hate Vegas irl (don’t hate me I live in Nevada and everyone in Nevada who doesn’t live in Vegas hates it, it’s practically required) SO I’m excited to set it there and dig into the magic and competition.

4. Tell us about your protagonist.

There are two protagonists in Magic in the City of Sin.

Lila Castell is a fire and ice elementalist. There isn’t much she cares about more than her family. She wants to do something more than perform though. She’s loud and passionate. Kinda mean at times but secretly she’s a cinnamon roll/just a girl in love.

Emersyn Adala is a wind elementalist (or is she???) who poses the rare ability to form illusions. She’s serious and determined, an artist who cares more for performing than pretty much anything else. Puts her troupe above everyone else. Wears her heart on her sleeve. Is a cinnamon roll.

5. Who (or what) is the antagonist?

The antagonist is the person or persons (I know who it is but don’t want to give it away) who are sabotaging the exhibition and killing elementalists. Also, the rivalry between their families that is keeping them apart.

6. What excites you the most about this novel?

The romance and the magic. I haven’t written a novel that’s focused mostly on the romance between characters in a long time and I’m super excited to dive into Lila and Em’s complicated relationship.

7. Is this going to be a series? Standalone? Something else?

Standalone! Which is rare for me and kind of exciting.

8. Are you plotting? Pantsing? Plansting?

Plotting! I’m in the middle of hardcore plotting it out as we speak. *sobs uncontrollably because she’s not done yet and NaNo is less than a week away*

9. Name a few things that make this story unique.

I think the setting makes it fairly unique. As does the Romeo & Juliet-like relationship between two girls with a happy ending. And the magic that will be in it.

10. Share a fun “extra” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

Don’t forget to join the link up on Musings of an Elf and tell me below if you’re attempting NaNo next month!
